 Nouns and Verbs with the same form

Can a verb also be a noun?

Many common words can function as nouns and verbs with the same form.

Let’s take a look at an example:

The word:  answer

What is the answer? 

The answer is a noun in this sentence. 

Answer the question.

The answer is a verb in this sentence. 

The word:  play

 I like to play in the park with the kids.

 Play is a verb in this sentence.

Did you see the play on Wednesday?

Play is a noun in this sentence.

There are lots of words that can be both a noun and a verb. 

Here are some words that are both nouns and verbs.

BRAKE

Noun: The driver suddenly put on his brakes.

Verb: He braked suddenly.

COUGH

Noun: She has a bad cough.

Verb: She is coughing terribly.

COST

Noun: The average cost of rent has gone up.

Verb: How much does it cost?

DIET

Noun: I need to go on a diet.

Verb: I need to diet.

DREAM

Noun: I had a dream about you last night.

Verb: What did you dream about last night?

GUESS

Noun: She did not know the answer, so she had a guess.

Verb: She guessed the answer on her first try.

QUEUE

Noun: I had to wait in a queue for two hours.

Verb: I had to queue for two hours.

LAUGH

Noun: You gave me a good laugh.

Verb: He laughed at her jokes.

HEAT

Noun: the heat of the sun

Verb: Shall I heat up some soup for dinner? 

HELP

Noun: It looks like she needs some help. 

Verb: Will you please help me?

HOPE

Noun: What are your hopes for the future?

Verb: I hope we win!

PAINT

Noun: I like that paint.

Verb: Do you want to paint?

RAIN

Noun: There was a lot of rain yesterday.

Verb: It rained a lot yesterday.

REPLY

Noun: I wrote a reply to your email.

Verb: I replied to your email.

REST

Noun: I had a short rest.

Verb: I should rest for a few days.

SLEEP

Noun: I must get some sleep. 

Verb: I could not sleep last night.

SMILE

Noun: He gave me a smile this morning.

Verb: He smiled at me this morning.

TASTE

Noun: This chocolate has got a strange taste.

Verb: This chocolate tastes strange.

WAIT

Noun: The long wait to  see the doctor made me anxious.

Verb: I am waiting to see the doctor.

WORK

Noun: I’ve got so much work to do.

Verb: I always work hard.
